About Rho Tau

- What is Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia?

Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia is a national music fraternity for men and membership is open to all men who have a sincere love of music and brotherhood. Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia was founded on October 6, 1898 at the New England Conservatory of Music when a group of 13 young men, under the guidance of Ossian Everett Mills, "met to consider the social life of the young men students of that institution" and to "devise ways and means by which it might be improved."

Sinfonia became a national fraternity on October 6, 1900 with the admission of another group of men into the group at the Broad Street Conservatory in Philadelphia. Since that time, Sinfonia has grown into the largest music fraternity in the world with more than 140,000 brothers, and chapters on over 200 college and university campuses across the nation.

By teaching men who are united as brothers to live their lives according to Fraternity's ideals, Sinfonia builds better, stronger, broader individuals who are able to live in sympathy and in harmony with their Fraternity brothers and their fellow man.

- What is the Object of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia?

The Object of this Fraternity shall be for the development of the best and truest fraternal spirit; the mutual welfare and brotherhood of musical students; the advancement of music in America and a loyalty to the Alma Mater.

- What are the benefits of membership?

Sinfonia is a brotherhood of men bound together for mutual helpfulness. Its purpose is not only to bring men together as friends, but also to provide a network of brothers with whom men can commune- a support network that helps the individual to meet the challenges that face him in his daily life, and in the professional world.

Sinfonians share a love of music that unites them as brothers with a common interest. The Fraternity teaches men to develop themselves and their art, not for the sake of art itself, but as a means of enriching the lives of others. Through a multitude of chapter, state, and national events, Sinfonia offers unlimited opportunities for performance, community music outreach, and other activities designed to develop a true appreciation for the power of music to uplift the soul.

- Membership Elegibility

Membership in Phi Mu Alpha is open to any man with a love and interest in music. The Rho Tau Chapter requires that each man have a minimum cumulative G.P.A. of 2.5 (C+) to be considered for probationary membership. See information about rush week.

- What is the process of becoming a member?

The Rush Week of Phi Mu Alpha is a period that is designed to help prospective members and brothers to become more acquainted. Through a series of musical and social events, brothers and prospective members are able to meet and get to know each other. All participants of the rush week activities are considered for probationary membership and at the conclusion of the rush period invitations are sent to prospective members offering probationary membership.

The probationary membership period may last from four to twelve weeks depending on the chapter, and consist of constructive activities, projects, and programs designed to educate the probationary members on the virtues, purposes, history, and structure of the Fraternity.

Following successful completion of the probationary membership period, the next and most important step in attaining membership is participation in the initiation ritual ceremony of Phi Mu Alpha. This ceremony, which will mark the transition into full membership, is generally acknowledged to be one of the most meaningful and beautiful of the Greek fraternal tradition.
